Abstract + Keywords Teleconsulation needs occur in various situations such as between the hospital and home, when an expert specialist is needed in rural areas, between healthcare professionals during shared care of patients or when a patient is referred to an overseas hospital. A system is designed that allows professionals to search for on-line colleagues on the net, send and receive messages, converse on the same medical image using annotations and chat. Images can be acquired in DICOM format. They are then compressed into JPEG images for faster response. Sample forms are also available for transferring patient records when needed. Confidentiality is assured by excluding the patient’s name from all communications. The system can be easily extended to a permenant patient record management system for individual doctors, with record sharing and teleconsultation capabilities.
